Understanding how to describe a word that you don’t know is a key skill in any language.
Have your students create a situation with two characters: a native English speaker and a student studying English. The student wants something from the other character but doesn’t know the English word for it. Have the student describe the word in English so the native English speaker can figure out what the student wants.
See this example video, in which a student visiting an English-speaking country tries to order a cup of coffee to her liking.
This technique works in teaching other languages as well.
